ITESIWAJU OLAWOYIN PARISH, AGEGE

God’s General - Profile of His Grace Senior Elder Apostle Prophet (Dr.) Joshua Adesanya Oguntuga (JP) - A Mighty Man of Valour

Our father in the Lord Joshua Adesanya Oguntuga was born into a Christian family in the year 1932. His father, fondly called “Aba Power”, was the village head while his mother was a princess. He attended Saviour Anglican School, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, Nigeria and finished Standard six in 1953. His mother was very wealthy but she was struck by a deadly sickness in 1940. The sickness was so serious that she was taken from one spiritualist to the other until 1949 when God took total control.

All the while, Baba’s education had to stop due to his mother’s illness and the eventual death of his father. However, in the year 1949 (after his mother had been healed) our father in the Lord went back to school. When he finished Standard school, the eldest son of his mother, who was working in the then U.A.C in Lagos, asked him to come over to Lagos from Ijebu-Ode to work in the company. Baba was doing well in the company but he was forced to return to Ijebu-Ode due to some unforeseen circumstances. While in Ijebu-Ode, he found it difficult to get a good job prompting him to decide to go into teaching. In the year 1956, Baba decided to attend the Teacher’s college. Life was very difficult then because his mother was still recovering from her illness, so sustenance was challenging with help not coming.

After graduation from the Teachers college, Baba proceeded to obtain N.C.E and Advanced Diploma at Ibadan. After obtaining his N.C.E in 1964, Baba was transferred to Lagos because he was one of those students who performed well. On getting to Lagos, he worked at Ikeja, Igando, Idimu, Orile Agege and Ojokoro. He was transferred from Ojokoro to the School Management Committee (S.M.C.) where he spent about 6 years before moving finally back to State High School, Oyewole. Baba retired in 1991.

Baba describes himself as not so rich but by His grace God has been merciful because He always provides in a way he does not expect. When Baba retired for instance, he was not receiving more than 1600 Naira per month for an officer on Level 12 Grade 5. Our father in the Lord is a generous individual who touched and is still touching the lives of many.

Baba Oguntuga’s Ministry started in the year 1932. He was born into the Anglican Communion. So, as an Anglican he was baptized in 1937 by the Late Rev. Oyetola who later became Bishop. However, during his mother’s sickness the family went to a Cherubim and Seraphim Church where she eventually got healed so his mother insisted that the family remain there. As such Baba became a member of Cherubim and Seraphim Church Ogbo, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, Nigeria. In Baba’s words, the God of Cherubim and Seraphim saved his life in the face of diverse spiritual threats. Today our father in the Lord is the Head of his family with the grace by God for him to possess all his possessions denied him at the initial stage of his life.

The first Church Baba Oguntuga attended when he moved to Lagos was Cherubim and Seraphim El-Bethel Shiloh, Agege in 1965. After going round Baba discovered the Church was the biggest within the vicinity. In 1969, he was the Financial Officer of the Adult Harvest Committee of the Church. Baba eventually left Shiloh at the tail end of that same year as directed by God.

Baba was involved in trance for the first time in 1963. Before then, he used to make jest of those that call themselves “Visioneers” thinking they are just deceiving people. But when he got involved he was in trance for 3 days and he did not know anything until he came back. It was after his return that people told him that he had been in trance for 3 days. At a time, Baba’s Church Prophet told him and others that they can develop that Spirit and be more inclined. For that reason, a 7 day vigil was organized but only 3 persons, including our father in the Lord, got the Spirit. In that same year, Baba Oguntuga and others (about 50 individuals in all) were to be consecrated as “Aladura” at a service on Mt. Canaan in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State. While on the queue, someone amongst the elders stood up and pointed at the first and middle persons stating that they are to be anointed as Prophets and that they would be recognized as such internationally. This prophecy certainly has come to pass. On Baba’s return people started calling him a Prophet, even at Shiloh, without telling anyone of all that transpired. That was how his Ministry actually started.

Baba would always tell the story of a well in Magbon, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State which at first sight appears empty without the possibility of getting a bucket of water from it. However, if you read Psalm 24 into it 7 times the whole village can fetch from this well without exhausting it and whatever you use the water for acts quickly like magic. In those days people came from London and every part of the world to fetch water from it. The well is still there today.

After Baba Oguntuga’s exit from Shiloh God asked him to stay at home and that He will send someone to call him to where he will work for Him. God told him precisely that 3 people will come for him. In January 1970, 3 people came from one Elder Adesola of Christ Church Oke-Ayo with a message that he wanted Baba Oguntuga to come. Thereafter, our father in the Lord met Elder Adesola who asked Baba Oguntuga to team up with him so that they can develop the Church. Then there was no structure but a tent made of roofing sheets. As at that time, there were only about 5 to 10 worshipers. That year, the month of April to be precise, a structure was erected starting with the ground floor. The building had to be extended on 2 different occasions to accommodate more worshipers. However, God ministered later to Baba Oguntuga to lift the Church building up to what it is today (1983-1989). How Baba became the administrative and spiritual leader of the Church was a miracle because he never envisaged it. Elder Adesola before his demise was the head of the building section of the Lagos State Ministry of Works. He just woke up one day and started complaining that he was tired of the Cherubim and Seraphim Church and he moved his family out. Unfortunately, that heralded his problems and he later died in 1977. Then the mantle of leadership fell on Elder Shittu. He also died later and I was next in line and that was how I became the head of the Church.

On the path to Baba’s emergence as the Chairman of Lagos District Church Council (LDCC) Agege, Baba Sobowale of El-Bethel Shiloh of blessed memory was the Chairman at inception. The then Superintendent and Supreme Head of the Sacred Cherubim and Seraphim Church (Baba Alakoso) was very happy with Baba Oguntuga because of the role he played in the building of Oke-Ayo Model Parish, Agege. In 1979, he was ordained by the then Baba Alakoso as Special Apostle and Baba Alakoso insisted that Baba Oguntuga must be one of the executives because of his activities and measure of wisdom endowed by God. That was how he became a member and representative to the national headquarters at Orita Bashorun, Ibadan. He was always putting in his very best. When Baba Sobowale became ill and could not attend meetings, Baba Odubela (also of El-Bethel Shiloh) was chosen in his place while I was still a member and representative. Baba Odubela too became indisposed and Baba Akindele (Elder Apostle T.A. Akindele JP) of El-Bethel Shiloh was nominated to deputize for him. However, Baba Akindele declined on the premise that he does not know much of Ibadan and Cherubim and Seraphim Church administration, so I volunteered to assist him. Later on, 4 persons including Baba Afuwape (Senior Superintendent Apostle Prophet G.S. Afuwape), Baba Bashani (Senior Superintendent Apostle Prophet A.O. Popoola DD), Baba Akintola (Late Superintendent Apostle Akintola) and Baba Oguntuga were nominated. Baba Oguntuga deputized for Baba Odubela but he refused to become the chairman when Baba Odubela passed on. Our father in the Lord tried to foist it on Baba Afuwape who refused the offer. Baba Bashani and Baba Akintola also refused to serve in the capacity of chairman. Based on these refusals, the mantle of leadership as chairman of Lagos District Church Council Agege fell on Baba Oguntuga by the choice of the people. Baba Oguntuga describes his experience as LDCC Agege chairman as very good. Although it is not easy being a leader, our father in the Lord has been doing his best to make sure everyone work together in the face of challenges.

In terms of Baba Oguntuga’s achievements as district chairman, more Parishes have been created and Ministers-In-Charge of Parishes in the district have been well oriented on the fact that the Church is not a business organization and that whoever wants to find means of livelihood should go elsewhere rather than exploit the members of the Church. Also, more emphasis has been laid on evangelism as both indoor and outdoor revivals and evangelism drives have continued to hold. Baba Oguntuga’s continuous advice to Ministers-In-Charge and the Cherubim and Seraphim Church in general is that everyone should be very faithful and committed to work for God and not for money. As regards the issue of tithe, Baba always advice that Ministers should follow strictly the doctrine of the Bible and not put their entire personal burden on the income of the Church. Our father in the Lord is a strong supporter of the district’s Central Youth Fellowship (CYF) and encourages the involvement of youths in service and Church activities as they are the future of the Church. He is also the Grand Patron of the Sacred Evangelistic Ministry (SACEM), the evangelism arm of the district council.

Like David said in Psalm 84 that the greatest happiness is in the house of God, Baba Oguntuga’s own happiness is also in the house of God. When our father in the Lord is in the Church praying, singing and dancing, he is usually very happy to the extent that he forgets every earthly thing. All his worries and aspirations become a thing of the past immediately he sets foot in the Church. Baba’s favourite song is “Okan mi yo ninu Oluwa”.

Baba Oguntuga desires to be remembered for his service to humanity and God Almighty. He always desire to render free service and help those in need or trouble. To the best of his ability, Baba has been rendering service in this manner. His attitude and style of leadership have continued to earn Baba Oguntuga great admiration from far and near, from all those who know him.

No doubt, the legacy of His Grace Senior Elder Apostle Prophet (Dr.) Joshua Adesanya Oguntuga (JP) would subsist for a long time.

As was echoed by the host of Heaven in praising God concerning the birth of the Author and Finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12 vs. 2), our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ (I John 4 vs. 14), so we say “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will towards men” (Luke 2 vs. 14) as we converge in Lagos State on the occasion of the 84th Annual General Conference of our esteemed Sacred Cherubim & Seraphim Church of Nigeria and Overseas, a Church which was founded and continues to thrive on Jesus Christ the Solid Rock and Sure Foundation (Isaiah 28 vs. 16). We are rest assured in the words of the Bible that no other foundation can man lay other than that which has been laid which is Jesus Christ (I Corinthians 3 vs. 11). However, as a Church and individuals, the words of Paul the great Apostle should echo on in our minds as we journey on in Year 2014 – “But let every man take heed how he buildeth there upon” (I Corinthians 3 vs. 10). At this point in time, it is crucial to draw the attention of each and every one of us to certain things and divine expectations from us as individuals and the Church, as a God ordained institution.

We have over the past years given ourselves to so many events and activities to which we have been committing our precious God given endowments including time, money and knowledge. However, the big question is how much as individuals and Church have we been obedient sons and daughters in answering the call of our Lord Jesus Christ in respect of the “Great Commission”. For example, do we support the course of Evangelism with as much money and support we channel to Church Harvest activities among other engagements? The most important charge of Jesus Christ to us is “Go ye into the world and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16 vs. 15). Going into the world simply means leaving our comfort zone and doing all within our power to take Jesus Christ and the divine light of the truth to the ignorant ones in darkness. We need to persistently and continuously tell people about the love of God and the essence of believing in His son Jesus Christ, which is Salvation and Eternal life (John 3 vs. 16); that after this world shall come a place of no sorrow, no darkness and everlasting life (Revelation 21 vs. 1 – 4); that the signs of the end of the world are now with us and manifesting all around us (Matthew 24 vs. 3 – 41); that men ought to seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and other things shall be added (Matthew 6 vs. 33); that if men confess their sins, God is faithful and just to forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (I John 1 vs. 9); that there is no opportunity to redress our situation after death (Hebrew 9 vs. 27); that God shall bring every work into judgement, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil (Ecclesiastes 12 vs. 14); that Jesus Christ shall come quickly with His reward to give to every man according to his work (Revelation 22 vs. 12); that men ought to heed the call of Jesus Christ standing at the door of their life and persistent knocking (Revelation 3 vs. 20) etc.

We need to focus our teachings in the Church and the world on repentance and salvation, not prosperity, blessings and miracles, as is the order of the day presently around us.

We call for the putting in place of reliable and sustainable mechanisms at all levels of the Church (Unit Church, Parish, Zone [Local Government Area], District, Joint District [State] and General Conference [National]) for the conduct and engagement in well organised, financed and supported evangelism drives, on all fronts possible, to win converts for the Church of God and ultimately His Kingdom. We should bear in mind that thousands of souls were added to the Church and the Kingdom of God Almighty upon hearing the divine message through the Apostles in times past (Acts 2 vs. 14 – 41; Acts 4 vs. 1 – 4).

The obedience to the call for evangelism – the act of soul winning – by the Church and individuals shall surely attract the Lord working with us and confirmation of His words with signs following (Mark 16 vs. 20) bearing in mind the words of Mark 16 vs. 17 – 18.

As individuals and Church, we need to also dwell on the Word of God which is the Sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6 vs. 17). The Word of God was the defining power with which our Lord Jesus Christ confronted and conquered the devil (Luke 4 vs. 1 – 13). The biblical charge to us is “resist the devil and he will flee from thee” (James 4 vs. 7). Without the Word of God and the power of the Holy Spirit, it is impossible to resist and drive away the devil from his persistent tricks aimed at pulling us away from the path of Salvation. No wonder King David said “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee” (Psalm 119 vs. 11). The teaching and entrenchment of the Word of God in our Church members is important in view of the words of God in Hosea 4 vs. 6 that “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee…….”.  The word to note is “My people” and that God rejects all those that reject knowledge in His Word.

Concerning this, we are appreciative of the introduction of a uniform Sunday School Manual for the Sacred C & S Church Worldwide by our Father in the Lord, the General Superintendent and Supreme Head (Baba Alakoso Imole II) – His Eminence Most Elder Apostle Prophet (Dr.) Solomon Adegboyega Alao (JP) several years ago. However, we have observed over the years that so many of our Churches are not taking Sunday School as important as they should, Sunday School in most cases is not regarded as part of the Sunday Service so that people would say, for example, that Sunday School starts by 9am and Sunday Service by 10am. We need to change this orientation and the generality of Church members need to know that Sunday Service starts with Sunday School. Leaders in the Church need to champion the course of Sunday School, lead by example and give all the necessary support for the maintenance and sustenance of Sunday School in our respective Churches. Mechanisms ought to be put in place at all levels of our Church to monitor and ensure the conduct of Sunday School in all our Churches.

Similarly, it would not be out of place to mandate all our Parishes to ensure the conduct of Bible Study, at least once in a week, to further entrench the Word of God in our life and daily activities. As members of the Sacred Cherubim & Seraphim Church, we need to “Study to show ourselves approved unto God, a workman that needed not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2 vs. 15) and to rightly use the scripture as a tool for inspiration, profitability in the doctrine of Christ, reproof, correction and for instruction in righteousness (2 Timothy 3 vs. 16).

Finally as individuals, members and the Church, let us all remember at all times that men ought to account of us as true ministers of Christ and it is required of us that we be found faithful (I Corinthians 4 vs. 1 – 2); that we are ambassadors for Christ (2 Corinthians 5 vs. 20); and that we are epistles of Christ written in the hearts of men, known and read of all men (2 Corinthians 3 vs. 2).

We wish you all a fruitful and highly rewarding deliberation in Conference 2014 and journey mercies back home. Remain blessed in the Lord.

“Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear” - Hebrews 11: 3, and “This is the LORD’S doing; it is marvellous in our eyes” - Psalm 118: 23.

The manifestation of the Sacred Evangelistic Ministry popularly called by its acronym SACEM in physical realm was borne out of the great commissioning of our Lord Jesus Christ, the captain of our salvation who commanded that we should go out and make disciples for Him. Consequently, Jesus Christ had planted in the minds of the youths of the District the diverse ways of promoting evangelism based on the discussions in times past. While the spirit of God constantly wanted Senior Apostle Oluwasola Oyewole to spear head the establishment of such an evangelism driven body, he looked forward to seeing somebody who will do it. He always complained to the Holy Spirit like Gideon did in the Holy Bible.

The first District Harvest Thanksgiving Service under the Chairmanship of Most Special Apostle Bola Odubela, now a Superintendent Apostle, created an everlasting impression on the mind of Senior Apostle Oluwasola Oyewole. The revival aspect of the programme was anchored by the General Superintendent of the Sacred Cherubim and Seraphim Church of Nigeria and Overseas, His Eminence Most Elder Apostle Prophet (Dr.) Solomon Adegboyega Alao, JP (Baba Alakoso Imole II). It was an open air crusade. Although Senior Apostle Oyewole was elated, his spirit was troubled by the fact that by the following year the open air crusade could not continue due to some constraints.

Consequent upon the ministration of Senior Apostle Oyewole at the three (3) days revival programme of L.D.C.C Agege Harvest (tagged “God of all possibilities”) from 6th - 8th August, 2004 he deliberated with Pastor Prince Kosygin Oluwole Adetule and Prophet Taiwo Adeleke on how the youths can move evangelism forward in L.D.C.C Agege.

On Sunday 10th August, 2004 which marked the grand finale of the District Harvest, the Preacher of the day and Patron of the Sacred C&S Church, Orisun-Ayo Model Parish, Alimosho, Most Special Apostle E.O. Oyeneyin (now a Senior Superintendent Apostle) spoke on the need for members to give their money and time for the promotion of evangelism in our Church. Immediately after the thanksgiving service, Evangelist Yemi Oguntuga conferred with Senior Apostle Oyewole on what could be done to light the fire of evangelism which was becoming dim in L.D.C.C. Agege. Together with Evangelist Bola Akindele, the three individuals deliberated on a plan of action. A meeting was scheduled for Tuesday 12th August, 2004 at the Sacred C&S Church, El-Bethel Shiloh Cathedral, Agege (State HQ.). Some other youths across the district, including Pastor Kayode David, Pastor Shola Bankole (then Co-ordinator General of the Central Youth Fellowship LDCC Agege), Prophet SOS Akintola, Prophet Taiwo Adeleke etc., attended this meeting.

By the 19th of August, 2004 the body had contacted some Elders in the District Church Council to seek their blessing. Those that were contacted were the Chairman of L.D.C.C. Agege - His Lordship Superintendent Apostle Pro. J.A. Oguntuga JP (now Senior Elder Apostle); His Lordship Senior Superintendent Apostle (Dr.) T.A. Akindele JP (later elevated to the position of Elder Apostle) - Minister-in-Charge of Sacred C&S Church, El-Bethel Shiloh Cathedral, Agege (State HQ.); and the Co-ordinator of the District Council - Senior Superintendent Apostle T. Ogunmesa. The Elders were so happy with the conception of the body and assisted in its safe delivery. The body was unanimously approved at the general meeting of L.D.C.C. Agege on 23rd August, 2004.

In a meeting at Shiloh Mercy Land (1, Ojekunle Street, Amoo, Agege) the body was christened Sacred Evangelistic Ministry (SACEM) by Senior Apostle Oluwasola Oyewole out of the suggestion made by Pastor Kayode David that the body be known as Sacred C&S Evangelistic Squad. Three officers were later appointed by members to manage the ministry. They were Bro. Abraham Oluwasola Oyewole who later adopted the title “Christ Chief Messenger” instead of “President”, Bro. Bola Akindele - General Secretary, and Bro. Shola Bankole - Treasurer.

To God who has sustained the body and made it to flourish is the Glory. Kudos must be given to all Ministers-in-Charge, all Life Partners, Partners with Christ, the entire members of L.D.C.C. Agege, Guest Ministers who had honoured our invitation in times past and others too numerous to mention. The contributions of the Chairman Evangelical Committee of the C&S Unification Church of Nigeria & Overseas, Special Apostle Akin Owolabi (now the Secretary General) is quite commendable and appreciated. The sacrifice and commitment of members have also helped to sustain the body.

As at today, SACEM has organized numerous zonal revivals, open air crusades and participated in numerous evangelical programmes within and outside Lagos State. The maiden revival organized by the body was held at Sacred C&S Church, El-Bethel Shiloh Cathedral, Agege (State HQ.), between 20th and 24th October, 2004.

To the God of St. Moses Orimolade Tunolase be the glory.
